1. Chlumec nad Cidlinou
Known for peasant uprisings and the Karlova Koruna Château. Also worth visiting is the Baroque Loreto, which houses an exhibition on the town’s and region’s agricultural history. Though modest from the outside, the Loreto’s circular courtyard and interior layout are sure to impress. One of the most visited attractions is the FAJNPARK amusement park for children. On hot days, enjoy the hospitality of the local outdoor swimming pool.

2. Karlova Koruna Château
On the tour, you’ll discover the history of the prominent Kinský family, step inside the count’s bedroom, uncover the mystery of a bullet-pierced painting, and be wowed by Santini’s Column Hall. The château is famous for its unique marble hall with no corners, and for the long-standing tradition of parforce hunts associated with the Kinský family and the estate. A new interactive exhibition on hunting is housed in the renovated stables, where horses have recently returned.

3. Hrádek u Nechanic Château
One of the most beautiful châteaux in Bohemia takes you back to the Romantic period and old England. Once a summer residence of the Harrach family, guided tours share the rich history of this noble lineage. You’ll admire the lavish interiors and enjoy a great café named after Anna of Harrach. The château has also appeared in many fairy tales and historical films. Its typical red façade is truly unforgettable.

4. Prehistoric Archeopark in Všestary
Originally an experimental archaeology center, it was expanded with EU funding into a modern archeopark. The indoor exhibition features a cave, prehistoric graves, and a giant model of prehistoric landscapes, among other exhibits. Outdoors, you can explore a reconstructed prehistoric village with traditional structures.

5. Stěžery Zoopark

6. Podorlicko Folk Architecture Open-Air Museum in Krňovice
Features examples of folk architecture from Eastern Bohemia. These include relocated or reconstructed historical buildings furnished with period equipment. Traditional technologies come to life during regular events. The site includes around 20 structures, the most prominent being a windmill.

7. Třebechovice Nativity Scene Museum
In a newly renovated building, you’ll find over 300 nativity scenes made from various materials and from both traditional and unusual regions. The most valuable exhibit is the mechanical Probošt Nativity Scene, the only one in the Czech Republic declared a national cultural monument. Measuring 7×2 meters, it features over 2000 hand-carved parts and a complex moving mechanism.

8. Battlefield of 1866
In July 1866, one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the 19th century took place near the village of Chlum u Sadové, significantly influencing the political division of Europe. A marked trail guides you through key sites of the conflict, now home to memorials. The area also offers panoramic views of the countryside and Hradec Králové. The local museum is undergoing extensive renovations and is currently closed.

9. Nový Bydžov
Originally a royal town mentioned in records from 1305, it was built on a geometric plan that remains unique in medieval urban design. In the early 15th century, it became a dowry town for Czech queens. Highlights include the large Stuchlík Family Toy Museum, the City Museum with rare artifacts, and the Jewish cemetery, the third-largest in Bohemia.

10. Smiřice
The town lies along the Elbe Cycle Trail, a popular route among visitors. The main attraction is the château complex with the Baroque Chapel of the Epiphany, attributed to either the Dietzenhofers or Santini, featuring an altar painting of the Adoration of the Magi by Petr Brandl. The chapel is a national cultural monument and a venue for many cultural events and concerts due to its exceptional acoustics. It is open only occasionally – check the chapel’s website for details.
