From the perspective of the factory director, you are bringing the Ironman 70.3 triathlon to the Czech Republic. Can you briefly introduce this race to us?
IRONMAN 70.3 HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ will be the first race of this world-renowned triathlon brand in the Czech Republic. The race is designed to not only provide participants with an enjoyable race but also a friendly atmosphere and a variety of accompanying activities. The race’s center will be located in the historic city center on both sides of the Elbe River, with easy access to all facilities within walking distance. The clarity of the swim and run sections promises an attractive environment with broad fan and spectator support. The cycling section will lead through the undulating landscapes of eastern Bohemia.
You say that this is an original Ironman license, and medals with this logo are a dream for many triathletes. What kind of participation do you expect in the race?
The first year is a significant unknown, but we hope that up to 2,500 participants, including 1,200 in the main race (on the half Ironman distance 70.3), will join the races.
Do you expect international participation?
All races under the IRONMAN brand attract a wide international audience, and Hradec Králové will be no different. The ideal proximity of surrounding countries (Poland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary) suggests that we can expect a very interesting international field. Certainly, there will also be participants from more distant countries and continents beyond Europe.
Will there be a program for children during the race weekend?
The Saturday program will be primarily focused on children and family-friendly activities. We won’t reveal the exact details of the IRONKIDS program yet, but it will be fun and have a summery vibe!
Such an event surely requires the support of local authorities. How challenging was it to negotiate with the city?
The city of Hradec Králové and the Hradec Králové region have been very active in their approach to the possibility of hosting this international event. Both institutions see the potential in combining the history and culture of the eastern Czech metropolis with an international sports event, which will undoubtedly significantly promote the region on a global scale and increase tourism, not only in Hradec Králové.
Have you received any feedback from the Czech triathlon community?
Expectations are huge, of course. We anticipate that IRONMAN 70.3 HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ will spark a new wave of interest in triathlon and, ultimately, benefit not only the sport itself but also smaller races and triathlon clubs. We expect increased interest in triathlon, not only among children and youth but also among the general public who may have previously focused on running or cycling.
Which part of the race do you find the most attractive?
The swim section in the Elbe River is expected to be very attractive and unique. Due to its central location and the surrounding promenades, a huge open-air swimming pool with natural grandstands will be created. Spectators will be able to watch swimmers at every part of the course, creating a unique atmosphere.
So, the race will take place in the city center, and besides the race itself, will there be a program for visitors who are not participating directly?
We are preparing a three-day program that will attract not only triathletes but also recreational runners (a night light run). We are considering a food truck festival, musical productions, and many activities for the general public along the Elbe River (e.g., paddleboarding, river crossings).
How many people are involved in organizing such an event?
The core team has been working on preparing this event for over a year now. Gradually, more positions are being filled, and during the race weekend, more than 500 people will be involved in the organization.
